Examination and investigations
An examination guides the next steps. For vein symptoms, a duplex ultrasound may be recommended to assess blood flow. Ask the hospital whether a scan needs a separate booking.

Dialysis access surgery
Haemodialysis needs a reliable way to move blood to and from the dialysis machine. An arteriovenous fistula connects an artery to a vein; a graft uses a connecting tube.
Discuss access planning or an existing access problem with your kidney and vascular teams. Bring previous access and dialysis records.
Lipoedema
Lipoedema involves an abnormal build-up of fat, usually affecting both legs. Tenderness and easy bruising may occur; the feet are usually spared.
Assessment helps distinguish it from other causes of swelling and guides a plan for symptoms, movement and appropriate compression.
Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is persistent swelling caused by impaired lymph drainage. It can affect part or all of a limb.
Care may include skin care, exercise, prescribed compression and specialist lymphatic therapy. An assessment helps identify the cause and suitable care.
Peripheral vascular disease
Peripheral arterial disease narrows the arteries supplying the legs. Pain on walking that eases with rest, or a wound that is slow to heal, deserves assessment.
Assessment may include pulse checks, pressure measurements and ultrasound. Care depends on symptoms and circulation, and may involve medicines, exercise or a procedure.
Carotid artery disease
Narrowing of the carotid arteries in the neck can increase stroke risk. Assessment considers symptoms, scan findings and overall health to guide prevention and treatment.
Sudden facial droop, arm weakness, speech difficulty or loss of vision needs emergency care, even if it resolves. Do not book a routine appointment for these symptoms.

Questions before you book.
Will vein treatment hurt?
Many procedures use local anaesthesia. You may feel injections or pressure, and bruising or tenderness afterwards. Ask about pain control for your planned procedure.
When can I walk or return to work?
Walking is often encouraged after vein treatment. Return to work depends on the procedure, your recovery and your job. Follow your discharge plan.
When can I fly?
Discuss travel before booking treatment. Timing depends on the procedure, flight duration and your clot risk; obtain advice from your treating team.
Will I need compression stockings?
Your clinician decides whether stockings are appropriate, their strength and how long to wear them. The calculator helps with garment size once a product is prescribed.
Can varicose veins come back?
New veins can develop and treated veins may reopen. Treatment can improve symptoms, but a permanent cure or complete cosmetic result cannot be guaranteed.
